The course addresses the epistemological and methodological evolution of geographical thought from its origins to the contemporary. With respect to cartography, the course involves the reading and interpretation of maps in relation not only to the more typically geographical aspects but also in relation to the reading of landscape features. The course also includes the study of geography teaching, illustrating theories and providing tools and methods for preparing for teaching geography in schools.

Learn the history of geographical scientific thought, illustrate the process of scientific and cultural legitimation of geography through the proposal of case studies aimed at illustrating the relationships between man and the environment, physical phenomena and their impact on societies using and interpreting information which quantities to be associated with current topics such as environmental sustainability and social inclusiveness.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
Provide methodological tools so that the knowledge acquired can contribute to the maturation and development of the student's ability to read and represent the complexity of the territory and of the co-evolutionary relationship between society and territory. The course is made up of two indivisible modules.
- The first module intends to provide students with: a) knowledge of the main moments in the history of the Italian language from its origins up to the sixteenth century; b) an introduction to Italian historical grammar.
At the end of the course the student will have to demonstrate: a) knowledge of the foundations of the historical grammar of Italian; b) know the main moments in the history of the Italian language from its origins to the sixteenth century.

The Modern History course imparts the basic knowledge relating to the history of Europe between the fall of Constantinople and the formation of the unitary Italian state (1453-1860) in its relations with other continents. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Principal aims:
The students will learn the scientific principles that regulate the organization and management of libraries and the possibility of using book collections. Three-quarters of the course will be devoted to analysing the theoretical methodologies and principles of the Library Science and to improve the students’ critical abilities in that field. The remaining lessons will be devoted to practice exercises, with the aim of developing the student’s ability of consulting OPACs and bibliographic databases and visiting libraries in Rome.

Specific aims:
A. Knowledge and understanding.
To acquire knowledge and understanding about the methodological foundations of Library Science, and to know the present set of rules concerning the Italian public libraries and their services, such as the reference services, the lending services, e-Books, and digital lending. To know and understand digital resources, such as e-Journals, and different kinds of digital libraries, among others the Biblioteca digitale italiana and the Europeana portal, by way of practical exercises in the course of lessons. To know and understand the Open access scientific communication methodology.

B. Applying knowledge and understanding.
To acquire knowledge and understanding the developments originated by the use of new technologies in libraries. At the end of this course, students will also be able to make bibliographical search consulting the Italian SBN OPAC and to find digital objects in the Biblioteca digitale italiana, using the MIC Internetculturale gateway.

C. Making judgments.
Because of the guided visits to libraries in Rome and to the Sapienza DigiLab laboratories, students will be able to evaluate the differences among the services offered by the different kinds of libraries.

At the end of the course the students will be able to recognise, interpret and exemplify the main phenomena pertaining to educational linguistics, with particular regard to:
1) the dictates of the Common European Framework of Reference for European languages (which will be applied to the teaching Italian as L2);
2) the role of grammar in teaching in schools of various types and levels (with particular reference to Italian as L1); 3) the language teaching implications in the presence of deaf learners.
The student will learn to plan an adequate language lesson with respect to the learner's needs and idiosyncratic characteristics, to the specific context in which the course is delivered and to the purpose of the teaching process.
